We Are Photogirls

Founded in 2005, We Are Photogirls are an all-female collective of photographers, stylists and makeup artists whose objective is to teach, create and generally spread the word about fashion photography. This they do by curating photography events, giving talks on positive self-image, offering a consultancy service on teen brands and generally sharing their expertise in all aspects of fashion photography with young aspiring photographers.

A big part of what We Are Photogirls are about is running workshops where they can advise and interact with young photographers. One such workshop produced the wonderful image above, themed around the idea of a 'Hollywood widow attending the funeral of a famous fashion designer', and was styled and shot by two girls, Elena and Phoebe, who are 15 and 14 years old respectively. Another recent workshop was with the Eating Disorders Child and Adolescent Inpatient Service at Springfield Hospital and involved photographing fashion environments in the grounds with the girls who receive treatment there.

Founding members Emily Stein and Celia Willis first met whilst studying at Camberwell College of Arts back in 1998, and when they're not busy devoting their time to We Are Photogirls, Willis works on site specific installations whilst Stein shoots for the likes of The Guardian, Dazed & Confused, Puma and MTV.
